ATHENS TRAVEL GUIDE

tarynintotravel.com | Athens Travel Diary | How to See Athens | Travel Diary | Where to go in Athens | Food in Athens

Our first big trip together was Greece, we prepared for this trip for MONTHS.. not exaggerating.. Athens was our first stop. It was also the stop that we had the most sights to see in such a short amount of time. Once we got there we realized how much closer everything was than we had originally anticipated! There was so much to see! After Athens we went to Mykonos and then onto Santorini.. both posts to come!

WHERE WE STAYED

We chose to spend a little less on our Athens hotel and honestly.. we regretted it. If you guys are planning to visit Athens, I would say find a closer option. Don’t get me wrong, it was nice- the inside was very updated and beautiful.. but it was a little further than we would have liked. Plus there was a KILLER view on the rooftop where they also had a bar and seating. In hindsight, we would have stayed on the other side of the the Acropolis. We stayed at the Athens Center Square Hotel. It was about a 15 minute walk to the Parthenon and like 8 minutes to the train station where all of the shops and restaurants were.

GETTING TO THE HOTEL

When we arrived to the Athens airport, we didn’t exactly have a plan for how we were going to get to the hotel.. but it was easy to navigate around the airport! First, we exchanged some money just to have on hand, we needed it right away with the Taxi that we ended up taking. It was 38 euros to get to the center of Athens. TIP: Make sure you know the address and have a screen shot of where the hotel is on the map. It also wouldn’t hurt to have printed Google Maps instructions, maybe we just had a bad taxi driver but it was touch and go for awhile on if we were going to get to our hotel… haha. The train will take you to and from the airport as well, but we weren’t sure how that would work for us. If we were to go again we would use the train because it was very easy to use.

SITES TO SEE

We were there for two nights (one and a half full days) and that was absolutely plenty of time. We really only needed one full day to see everything that we wanted to! We bought a pass at the entrance to Ancient Agora that got us into all of the attractions except for Panathenain Stadium. It was 30 euros each and well worth it!

  1. Ancient Agora - it took us about 3 hours to walk through and be able to take it all in. I think our jaws were on the floor the whole time we were in Athens, really… haha it had so many great buildings such as the Temple of Aries(which was nothing but markers of where it was), Temple of Apollo Patroos, and the Church of The Holy Apostles. We also met a tortoise friend.. so cute, melted my heart.

  2. Stoa of Attalos - this was inside of the Ancient Agora and was so interesting to look at all of the artifacts that had been found in Ancient Agora. It had tons of things like beautiful sculptures, pottery, coins, statues, weapons and a mini replica of what Acropolis hill used to look like.

  3. Library of Hadrian - We didn’t go in this while we were there but walked around it. In hindsight, I’m not sure that you could go in it. It did make for cool pictures though!

  4. The Acropolis - This was something that we woke up really early to go do and we are so glad that we did. We were alone with very few people for two hours of the five that it took us to see everything. I would highly recommend getting there as soon as it opens to be able to take photos without people in the background. There are more than what I am listing but these are the highlights!

    • Herodes Theater - We spent so much time looking at this, we were just baffled at the narrow steps, the view, the architecture. Amazing!

    • Temple of Athena Nike - We walked through this to get to the Parthenon. There were no railings and slippery steps but it was just so amazing to see. Lots of photo ops!

    • Parthenon - basically the entire reason we wanted to go up the hill but shortly found out there was so much more to it. Dustin said it fulfilled every one of his childhood dreams of Greece. Absolutely breathtaking!

    • Erechtheum/Pandroseion - This building had 6 ladies carved as pillars holding the building up, and we joked about them being the ladies from Hercules.. They aren’t but it definitely looks like it!

    • Dionysos Theatre - Once we walked back down the hill on the other side, there was another theater to see. I believe it was the older of the two.

  5. Temple of Olympian(Zeus) - This was a trek to get to from the Parthenon but well worth the walk. It was interesting because some of the extremely tall pillars had fallen over and were left there. Looking at these you could see all the detail that went into making them so they would all fit together! It was sort of sad at how little of it was still there.

  6. Panathenain Stadium - This was one of my favorite things to see. It had a track to run around, everything was made of stone and just so cool to see. We spent a lot of time here taking pictures, like seriously it was so fun here!

  7. National Gardens - On the way back to the hotel we walked through the National Gardens and this was interesting to see in the middle of all of the buildings. There were some streams and animals in the gardens as well. When we were walking back we were able to walk past the Hellenic Parliament building.

PHOTO OPP: Monastiraki Square both during the day and at night, or in our case at 5:30 am when we were walking to the train! It was great in the morning because there weren’t people in the shot, it was just Dustin and I!

WHERE WE ATE

We didn’t eat out very much in Athens, we were jet lagged and our schedules were so off so our meal times were really off.

Maiandros Restaurant.. We ate here for dinner on our first night. This place was delicious, it had a family-run feeling and they were the nicest people! We also ate on the roof, such a great view of the Parthenon! FYI: Most of the restaurants had the menu in both English and Greek.

DaVinci for gelato.. so good. Need I say more?! We tried the strawberry and the cookies and cream, no complaints here!

The Greco’s Project.. we ate so much food here haha we got the fried mini zucchini (MUST HAVE), the chicken meat on a spit with potato chips/french fries and then Dustin got the chicken souvlaki. Even when we were ordering the waiter was like that is plenty. The waiters were extremely helpful and even looked out for you. I had my phone sitting out on the corner of the table and he pointed to it and said “I would recommend you put that in a safer place.” Making sure we didn’t get anything stolen by a pick pocket. They also brought us a mini chocolate cake and then a sort of grittier(for lack of a better word) coffee cake(SO GOOD). We loved that most restaurants brought you a sample of dessert, it was a fun surprise to see what you would get at the end of your meal.

GETTING TO THE FERRY

We walked about 5 blocks from our hotel to the train station that took us all the way to the ferry. We liked the train, it was clean and quick(especially at 5:30am). We exited the train at Piraeus and walked out of the station. Almost every single person that was on the train with us was going to get on the Ferry. Before we could get on we needed to stop at the ticket booth to get our tickets because all we had were confirmation numbers in our email to pick them up. This took about 15 minutes because most people needed to do the same, so factor that in time-wise! We used Direct Ferries, there were huge signs for it, we saw them as soon as we walked out of the station. TIP: When you are booking your Ferry tickets, make sure that you triple check the date that you are selecting, even though you might have originally chosen a certain date, they will add dates around it at different prices. The people at the ticket booth told us which dock our ferry was at. We had no problems with it at all and it was fairly seamless. For the first ferry to Mykonos we opted for the longer ride which was cheaper and it was about 4 hours long. There was another option that cost more that was only about 2 hours long. We brought cards and that in addition to watching the ocean, the time flew by! I would recommend if you take the longer ride you can save even more by getting the standard ride ticket instead of assigned seats. We ended up leaving our seats and going topside to watch islands go by and get some sea air!

Athens has been a place I have wanted to go for so so long. Dustin as well, he took a lot of Greek Myology classes in college and it had been on his list ever since. Have you guys been to Athens? What was your favorite part?

BOOKS TO READ IN 2019

www.tarynintotravel.com | Books to Read in 2019 | Books to Read | New Year Goals | Books to Read in the New Year

One of my New Years resolutions for this year is to read a book a month. For accountability I am adding them to the blog and wanted to share them with you guys! I always feel better when I am reading and I actually think I write better content when I read. I’m not sure if I will go in this order but I will let you guys know when I start and end each one! Who knows, I might even add more to this list. Most of these books are ones that I have bought and then let other things take priority over reading. This list is also such a random assortment!

  1. Girl, Wash Your Face - Everyone and their mom (and my mom) have been recommending this book to me! So it is the first one on my list!

  2. The Devil Wears Prada - I chose this one because I never knew it was a book and I LOVE the movie. It also has really good reviews!

  3. The Joy Of Less: A Minimalist Guide to Declutter, Organize, and Simplify - I am very excited about this one, I think with traveling you definitely learn that less is more and your experiences are FAR better than things.

  4. Yes Please - This one has been on my list since it came out a couple of years ago but never pulled the trigger, it will happen this year!

  5. A Stranger in the House - I bought this before we went to Mexico last summer and read my other book first. Its a thriller and to be honest I have never read one.. I will keep you posted!

  6. When Life Gives you Lululemons - This is the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada and I have heard so many good things! Excited for this one!

  7. Not that Kind Of Girl - I have had this book for two years, maybe more.. ITS TIME lol

  8. Red Sparrow - This is another thriller but it sounded very interesting.. It sort of sounds like the movies Salt crossed with Taken lol so we will see how that goes. Plus its a movie so I can watch it after I read it and compare!

  9. Habits of a Happy Brain - this seems like a fun one to me, it has exercises to turn on the chemicals that make you happy.. might be crap, might be great ha we will find out!

  10. Eat, Pray, Love - This is a movie that I haven’t watched in my adult life but when I was searching for books to inspire travel, this came up multiple times. Thus, it made the list.

  11. Girl, Stop Apologizing - the sequel to number one on my list! It comes out on March 12th but you can preorder it here!

  12. Crazy Rich Asians - When this movie first came out I wasn’t actually that interested and then I found out it was based in Singapore and that just intrigued me, because I actually studied abroad in Singapore in college! So I want to read this one before I watch the movie.

I think we will call this the year of actually completing something lol I would like to read the ones I have purchased before going out and buying the ones I don’t have. I can’t wait to make my way through this list! At the end of the year I will do a recap post to review them and hopefully make a list for the following year!

Does anyone want to read these with me? Have you read any of them or have other recommendations?? Let me know if the comments!

48 hours in Seattle

For our one year anniversary, Dustin surprised me with a short weekend getaway to Seattle. Seattle is a place that we had both wanted to go but just didn’t think it was in the cards for us this year. Usually I am the one who does a lot of the planning but it was so much fun to be able to take the backseat to this trip and just enjoy it! It was such a fun trip and seriously so unexpected!

WHERE WE STAYED

Dustin used our Expedia points to book our hotel. TIP: If you aren’t using something like Expedia or Hotels.com to earn rewards you are basically losing money! We stayed at Inn at the Market and it was literally RIGHT in the middle of everything that we wanted to do. We were like a block away from Pike Place Market and it was perfect. It was also so cute! I should have gotten pictures of our room, I really need to remember to do that going forward! The hotel staff were so helpful with recommendations for food. Most hotels do this now but they held our luggage while we explored because our room wasn’t ready and then again on Sunday when we checked out.

WHERE WE ATE

-Lunch at Zeek’s Pizza.. OH SO GOOD. I got the pizza called the Weekend Hippie.. Drool! Also, we got Cider flights and they were also good! We loved the first three on this list but the last was not for us lol

-Appetizers at Fisherman’s Restaurant on Pier 57, crab cakes and the calamari were the bomb diggity.. anyone else still say that? No? Just me?? Moving on…

-Drinks at The Diller Room, it was a cool atmosphere with tasty drinks but it did get crowded quickly! The bartender at Fisherman’s Restaurant actually told us to go here while we were getting appetizers! TIP: Always ask the locals where they go, they know best!

-More drinks… After The Diller Room we walked up the street a bit to this Kereoke bar called the Blarney Stone Pub and Restaurant. Honestly, it was one of our most fun nights ever! We watched people sing karaoke and played pool all night and had bar food/snacks for dinner. It was just fun! Speaking of karaoke.. does anyone else think of Baby Mama every time they say Karaoke… haha

-Coffee at the original Starbucks of course! We collect the “You are Here” mugs from Starbucks, its a fun way to remember where we have been with our morning coffee. Sadly ours broke in our recent move so it looks like we’re going to have to go back.. ;)

-Breakfast at Seatown Seabar, we had a really late breakfast, I’d like to thank the karaoke... I had the biscuits and gravy and Dustin had the crab cakes Benedict(noticing a trend for his breakfast choices?) lol ;) But they were both delicious.

-Lunch/Dinner… Because we had such a late breakfast we had an early dinner at Cantina de San Patricio, YUM. We had enchiladas and chips with guac! It was fun, we sat outside and just people watched(our favorite). UPDATE: Unfortunately, when I checked this link in 2022, this restaurant had permanently closed.

What we did

-Pike Place Market.. I could literally spend all day at markets. I love them, the beautiful flowers, fresh fruits and veggies, the hustle and bustle. Its so much fun! It was also cool because most of the venders in the market would ship what you bought back to your house. So you could get a fish and they would mail it to you lol

-Wings over Washington - If you have been to Disney World or Disneyland then its like Soarin’! It was really cool and I recommend doing it! It is a simulator ride but we still really loved it.

-Centennial Park.. we rented the Lime bikes and went to the Centennial park, it was a peaceful getaway right in the middle of the city with such pretty views of the water! Plus there were the cutest dogs everywhere.

-Gum wall.. definitely something to see but tbh…it was gross lol.. the smell was a bit much for me. But when we were on this trip someone told us that they have to completely clean the wall about every 6 months but I’ve also read that its only been cleaned once.. either way.. GROSS. Anyone know the actual answer?

-Chihuly Garden and Glass, we aren’t usually people who go into museums but this one intruged us. It was a blown glass museum and now every time we see blown glass anywhere we look at each other and say Chihuuuuuuuuuly in our most proper accents.. its a thing now and I don’t think we could stop saying it even if we tried lol

-Seattle Aquarium.. Dustin and I love anything having to do with animals.. zoos, aquariums, petting zoos, deer on the side of the road.. our dogs *insert cry laugh face*, ANYWHO…. but it was such a good one! If you have the time, definitely add the aquarium to your list, it was so so good. Just to be clear on how much we love aquariums.. the first thing we did in Boston when we moved here was buy a membership to the Aquarium haha

-Space Needle.. SO here’s the thing. I did not enjoy being in the space needle on a windy and rainy day. It was a bit terrifying and I am not usually scared of heights. But, we went in anyways.. it was alright. We probably wouldn’t pay to go in it again but if you’ve never been and its in the budget, knock your self out. We paid I think $30 each and were up there for like 10 minutes and that is including the ride in the elevator both up and down and waiting in line to get on the elevator in the air.

-The MoPOP museum, we didn’t go in but we took full advantage of the pink/purple-ish wall outside of the building. Once we got back to the hotel I looked into what it was and I really wish we would have gone in! It looks awesome. If you’ve been let me know in the comments if you liked it!

-Seattle’s Great Wheel.. we actually bought these tickets in combination with Wings over Washington. I think it was like 15 for the ferris wheel and 10 for Wings Over Washington. The ferris wheel was cool but again it was cloudy, so we couldn’t see very far. Definitely go if it’s a sunny day!

We packed SO much stuff into 48 hours but it was so worth it! It was also awesome because everything was pretty close and we really didn’t have to walk very far to get next to the destination on the list. We will have to go back though because we found more things we wanted to go after we left lol (doesn’t that always happen)?! Have you been to Seattle? What did we miss?! Let us know in the comments!

WHERE WE STAYED

Back in February, we decided to add Mexico to our list of places we wanted to visit. We started looking on Expedia for all of the different options and came across Mia Reef, we were instantly in love and started looking for the most inexpensive dates. TIP: Being flexible with travel dates has really helped us in finding the best deals.

We were there for 4 nights and 5 days and it was the perfect amount of time. The hotel is all-inclusive and had so many fun activities on site. They had everything from kayaking, snorkeling, a great pool with a swim up bar and they had a natural pool. They also have their own beach that is just beautiful! The staff was also great, they were helpful and enthusiastic! On the website it says that all tips are included but we tipped throughout the whole trip. Tip: Pull out about $150 in ones or fives when you get to the airport and use that to tip the staff at the hotel! Also, there was no need to exchange for pesos, everyone there took dollars!

SWIMMING WITH WHALE SHARKS

One of the most fun things that we did on our trip was the half day trip to swim with the whale sharks. We went with Pro Dive Mexico and they were just amazing! They were so knowledgeable and determined to make our experience incredible. A couple of tips for this, take Dramamine or some sort of motion sickness medicine prior to leaving the island. We bobbed in the open ocean for about 4 hours and it really started to make us sick. Another tip, bring a GoPro! Yes, the guide is taking videos of you the whole time but you have to purchase them at the end. We got amazing footage on our own...fo free(check out the video!!)

SEEING THE TURTLES

Lastly, we went to Tortugranja to visit the turtles on the conservation. As you can imagine, they were the cutest ever! Tip: We arrived about 30 minutes before they opened and they actually let us in early and we got to watch them feed all of the turtles while being the only people there! They had so many turtles in all different sizes! UPDATE: When I checked the link for this sanctuary in 2022, they have permanently closed their doors due.

Mia Reef was a dream and we literally tried to book another visit while we were in the airport before going home, we will definitely be back someday! We are SO excited to show you our first video for the blog! Check it out below and let us know what you think in the comments!!

8 Things We Learned While Traveling in Greece

8 THINGS WE LEARNED WHILE TRAVELING IN GREECE

Here are our 8 tips that we learned from traveling in Greece!

www.tarynintotravel.com | 8 Things We Learned While Traveling in Greece | Tips for Greece | Traveling in Greece | Travel Tips
  1. Resturants aren't accustomed to bringing you the check right away, so you will need to ask for it. We found this to be nice because it taught us to slow down and enjoy our time at each place. I think this made meals more like small experiences, and we made sure to make the best of them.

2. Be sure to bring shoes that have traction with you to Greece. Pro tip: put hot glue on the bottoms of your sandals(the glue will peel off when you get home)! The steps on the cliff side and around the towns are slippery in Mkyonos and Santorini, especially Oia where the walk way is marble! Especially in the picture to the left, this was the kind of the that was so slippery.

www.tarynintotravel.com | 8 Things We Learned While Traveling in Greece | Tips for Greece | Traveling in Greece | Travel Tips

3. In Athens, there are people who will walk up to you and compliment you and then give you something for free and say it’s free and then try to convince you into giving them money. Also if they say they have change for you, they probably don't. They sell things like flowers and homemade bracelets. We only saw them in the square next to the metro station.

4. In Mykonos and Santorini we recommend renting either an ATV or a moped. We wouldn't have been able to see half of the things we did had we not got these. BUT, BE CAREFUL when you are driving! Also, moped in Mykonos and ATV in Santorini, the moped was 30 euros for two days and the ATV was 60 euros for two days!

5. Almost every restaurant will have a staff member standing at the entrance and their job is to entice you to come in and it usually works, even if you had plans elsewhere! If you aren't feelin' what they have just repeatedly say thank you and move on.

6. Even though everything is beautiful at night, make sure you are watching where you are walking in addition to looking at those amazing views (I can’t even tell you how many times my husband almost fell down steps because he was looking at the ocean) lol

7. In Athens, make sure you never put anything on the table including things like your phone, wallet, keys.. there were some people who were walking around looking specifically for those kinds of things to steal/take. Luckily the workers at the restaurants are looking out for you. Moral of the story, keep your belongings close!

8. Bring jeans and a cardigan because it will be cold at nights(even in mid-May). There wasn’t one restaurant that didn’t offer us blankets though, so don’t let the wind steer you away from sitting on the rooftop!

San Francisco Travel Diary: Day Two

Www.tarynintotravel.com | San Francisco Travel Diary Part 2 | Weekend Getaway | San Francisco Travel | Weekend Travel Guide

ABOUT OUR DAY

Day 2 began very early, we set off around 8 and we had no real plan for the morning. We decided to stop when our noses could no longer handle the fabulous smells coming from Beach Street Grill Organics. Dustin had the Fresh Crab Benedict- LOOKED awesome, tasted better, but I will let you guys be the judge of how it looks! We ate outside and the weather was perfect. February is actually a surprisingly great time to visit San Francisco. Of course, we were coming from the arctic soooo….. UPDATE: Unfortunately when checking links in 2022, Beach Street Grill has permanently closed.

OUR ALCATRAZ TOUR

After breakfast, we headed to check in for our reservations at the Alcatraz Excursions tour. From breakfast to Pier 33 it was about a 15-minute walk, perfect to undo the yummy food we couldn’t tear ourselves away from. With a little time to spare we stopped at Pier 39 to watch the sea lions- they were hilarious to watch! I am in love with them….they are an attraction all on their own!

Www.tarynintotravel.com | San Francisco Travel Diary Part 2 | Weekend Getaway | San Francisco Travel | Weekend Travel Guide

The Alcatraz tour is streamlined and organized a definite plus when your time is limited. It is a short boat ride over to the island and then we were able to walk around the island on our own. They had an audio tour, I usually don’t love the audio tours but this one was interesting and informative. We learned so much about the prison itself and the day to day life of the prisoners and guards. This tour was not one to miss, take the time to book a tour with them. Just make sure you do it a couple of weeks in advance because they fill up fast! They also have a night tour, and I was told that needed to be booked even further in advance. The cost was worth the experience for sure, we would recommend doing it to anyone. Has anyone ever done the night tour? I'm not sure it would be for me…..ghosts…spoooooky!

The tour took 3 hours from start to finish including the boat ride times. We starting walking back towards Pier 39 to find some grub. We stopped at Eagle Cafe. We sat outside at the bar on the patio and saw the most amazing views of Alcatraz, the bay and Pier 39. A great place for people watching if I might add. The french fries were great, we both got the Crab Salad sandwhich. It wasn't what we were expecting but it was fine.

OUR LUNCH AND AFTERNOON

After lunch we walked by the bay all the way to the beach in front of the Maritime Museum. We took our shoes off and walked in the sand. They had a foot shower to wash off the sand and then we headed to Ghiradelli Square for a sweet treat. We got our chocolate squares and sat on the grassy hill for almost 3 hours. Being from Minnesota, the sun was a stranger and we couldn't be happier to be laying in the sun. There were dogs and people everywhere just relaxing, it was perfect! We headed back to the hotel to change for dinner.

DINNER TIME

We started our evening with oysters on the half shell and a glass of wine at the Wines of California Wine Bar. It was the perfect setting, we sat on the patio and watched the boats on the water. They had the prettiest lights and it was peaceful in the middle of the busy pier. Further down the pier at Hana Zen is where we had dinner, the sushi was amazing! We reccommend the Lion King roll, only a bit obsessed with Disney....its fine.... We ended our night by sitting on the benches listening to the sea lions on the pier, amazing! UPDATE: Unfortunately when checking links in 2022, both of these places have closed.

San Francisco Travel Diary: Day One

WHERE WE STAYED

When we were planning our weekend getaway to San Francisco, we knew we wanted to stay in Fishermans Warf. Most of what we wanted to do and see were there so we decided to stay at Holiday Inn Fishermans Wharf. This hotel was perfect for what we needed it for. It was close to everything, and it was a great place to crash for the night, with such short trip- we knew we wouldn’t be in the room often. It was reasonably priced and the staff was great, they let us check in at 10 AM rather than the standard 3 PM- for free I might add!

Www.tarynintotravel.com | San Francisco Travel Diary Part 2 | Weekend Getaway San Francisco Travel | Weekend Travel Guide

ABOUT OUR DAY

We knew we wanted to maximize our time in San Francisco so we booked the earliest flight Friday morning. We arrived around 9:15 and got to our hotel at 10:00, we were hungry because our stomachs thought it was lunchtime for sure. We checked into our hotel and immediately went to find food. I had never been to In & Out Burger so obviously we ate lunch there.

Www.tarynintotravel.com | San Francisco Travel Diary Part 2 | Weekend Getaway San Francisco Travel | Weekend Travel Guide

After lunch, we set off to explore. As a rookie mistake we started walking uphill (we seriously recommend NOT doing that)! We started walking and walking and walking...and while it was fun, we ended up wearing ourselves out from too much walking. We should have utilized some public transportation and saved our feet from the abuse. We ended up taking the trolley from Fishermans Wharf to downtown San Francisco. The trolley took us right to the center of Union Square, where we found one of my favorite activities a plenty....shopping.

We didn’t spend much time in downtown, we did a bit of window shopping and then took the trolly back to Fishermans Wharf. We waited for about 30 minutes to get on the trolley but could have saved a lot of time walked up the street a bit and just hopped on. TIP: Just make sure you have your ticket ready if you go that route! We got off the trolley and headed back to the hotel to change for dinner.

Www.tarynintotravel.com | San Francisco Travel Diary Part 2 | Weekend Getaway San Francisco Travel | Weekend Travel Guide

We basically ate our way through San Francisco and we weren’t mad about it. We headed out from the hotel on the hunt for drinks. We stopped at Franciscan Crab Restaurant for drinks and calamari. We sat at the bar and the views were amazing. Drinks, Calamari and views...the trifecta of awesomeness. After we walked further to the pier, and stopped to eat dinner at Fog Harbor Fish House! Our service was fantastic and so was the food. Dustin had an entire Dungeness crab and I had the lobster mac n’ cheese. YUM! Can you really go wrong with lobster mac n' cheese? After all this yummieness and being completly full.... we were exhausted from traveling and walking {and eating} so we headed back to our hotel to pass out in a splendid food coma.
